An unsettling experimental documentary that imagines a guided visit through a national mental hospital, The Torment Zone (La Región del Tormento) delves into the mechanisms of psychiatric and legal control that define the treatment of madness. Blending archival textures, hand-drawn animation, and documentary fragments, Marcello Mercado constructs a surreal and claustrophobic environment where medical and judicial discourses intertwine. The result is both a political and psychological reflection on the boundaries of reason and confinement—an early work that anticipates Mercado’s later investigations into biopower, institutional violence, and the anatomy of control.

This extremely powerful short film quickly and mercilessly plunges viewers into an insane world. Wild images and sounds collide, creating a nerve-shattering result. It is a stunning prelude to Polanski’s foray into madness.

Mercado’s work covers multiple territories: history, power, abuse, and suffering. His collage connects the present with today’s time: it presents the wounds of history, the scars of all those nameless victims, and the agony that survivors cannot express. It is a video about times that last and, for many, will never end. This is why his artistic viewpoint is of eminent importance not only in Latin America, but also in the present.

Il s’agit d’une visite imaginaire dans un hôpital psychiatrique, guidée par des personnages de dessins animés.

La région de la torture décrit l’enfermement, celui qui résulte de l’impuissance médicale face à la folie. Celui que prône le discours psychiatrique.

Mercado nous plonge dans son propre enfer expressionniste grâce à un répertoire d’images sonores et visuelles percutantes. Peintures d’un style proche de la Nouvelle Figuration, dominantes de couleurs difficiles pour la vidéo, comme le rouge et le bleu, bande sonore riche en couleurs, plaintes et libéralisme économique corrompu. La douleur sous-jacente cache un passé douloureux et obscur, sans pardon, difficile à supporter.

„Das Reich der Qual” steht für Einzäunung. Das Band thematisiert die Vorherrschaft des medizinisch-psychiatrischen Diskurses sowie die Hilflosigkeit der Gesetzgebung bei der Behandlung von Geisteskrankheiten. Die Psychiatrie ist eine Form der Folter. Eine künstlerische Annäherung.

La metáfora biológica no es casual, ya que en La región del tormento y El vacío, el cuerpo es instrumento y caja de resonancia, lugar de encuentro del yo con el otro (el sexo y la política) y del yo con la nada (la muerte).
