In Das Kapital, Version 82: Exponential Capital, Marcello Mercado continues his decades-long deconstruction of Karl Marx’s seminal text by replacing its linguistic architecture with a sequence of ungraspable numerical scales. Each chapter and section of Capital, Volume I is stripped of explanatory discourse and reconstituted as a solitary number—expressed in scientific notation or extreme multiplicative form—drawn from the accelerating mathematics of computation.
This is not a translation of Marx into the present, but a structural detonation. The rhetorical and analytical scaffolding of the 19th century collapses under the weight of metrics whose origins lie in the exponential growth curves of hardware and software: 1 × 10^37 operations per second
, 4.8 × 10^29 parameters
, 75,000 × 10^12 flops
. These numbers, while precise in form, are meaningless in conventional human terms. They do not illustrate the concepts of value, surplus, or circulation; they obliterate them through scale.
Mercado’s intervention builds on his earlier Das Kapital iterations, where the text was reprocessed through bioart, algorithmic transformations, digital weights, and AI-generated imagery. In Version 82, the gesture reaches its most reductive and most abstract form: the book becomes a ledger of incomprehensible quantities. Each page is a computational monolith, reducing economic theory to the raw abstraction of number, yet pushing number beyond any operational capacity of the mind.
This is not mere data visualization. The numbers are not meant to be calculated, compared, or even understood—they are meant to be encountered. In this encounter, the reader is confronted with the limits of both economic critique and human cognition. Exponential Capital suggests that contemporary capital—data capital, cognitive capital, algorithmic capital—no longer operates on scales that traditional political economy can measure or contest. It is capital that lives in the interval between a machine’s speed and a human’s perceptual threshold.
By aligning Marx’s structural rigor with Kurzweil’s vision of exponential growth and the astronomical metrics of AI infrastructures, Version 82 becomes a conceptual archive of a world in which value, computation, and time are entangled beyond measure. The work reframes the act of reading Das Kapital as an act of standing before a black hole: you can circle it, observe its surface, measure its event horizon, but the content—the reality within—remains fundamentally inaccessible.
